Artist Biography

Carter Malik is an artist with a lifelong interest in fine arts and handmade heritage crafts and textiles. She is a global citizen and has lived and painted in many parts of the world.

She studied at the Academy of the Grand Chaumiere in Paris, France, and at The Art Student League in New York. She joined the studios of Hudson Valley artists such as Henry Gillette, George Kelly and Jean Olds in Croton on Hudson, New York. She was accepted as a student of Chinese painting under the late great Master Huang Yongyu in Beijing, China.  

While in China, she set up house in Shangrila, Yunnan on the Tibetan plateau and opened a Center to promote traditional local crafts. Here, during her spare time, she painted with a group of women artists known as Women Tea Horse Caravan Leaders.

Her lifetime work includes oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, collage, Chinese Brush and Ink, and digital art.   

Originally from Sacramento, California she has travelled widely.  She left California for Paris, moved on to Kathmandu, Nepal where she met and married her husband and made a life long commitment to Asia.  She was founder/director of the Yunnan Mountain Handicraft Center and Library in Old Town Shangri La, China (2009-2019).  Her lifelong interest has been fine arts and handmade heritage crafts and textiles. At present, she lives in Austin, Texas with her husband.
